Credit repair is no fun, but at least when you did it to yourself, it is somewhat comforting. When however, it a credit reporting agency that mistakenly put incorrect information on your sacred credit report, credit repair is getting quite aggravating.

Recently we came across several cases, when derogatory records got on the credit reports simply because of the negligence of Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. Often creditors do not furnish Social Security numbers to the credit agency. Often the incorrect misspelled information is given. So when trying to locate the proper person and report, the Experian, TransUnion and Equifax do cross checks based on last names, first names, addresses, etc. With common names and sometimes similar addresses, mistakes are easy.

If it happens to you, you have some credit repair to do. First, contact the original creditor whose account is listed as derogatory on your credit report. Make sure they understand that you are not the same person who defaulted. This most commonly happens with utility companies and medical offices. If you never had account with the lender or a utility company, you will need to prove it. Sometimes it is easy, when say you live in completely different area, sometimes it is more difficult. Second, once you straighten this out, contact credit reporting agency and initiate the dispute. This credit repair process could be a hassle, so get your free annual credit report to make sure there are no incorrect records posted.
