Residents of New York are now able to lock their credit reports. First time credit report freeze is free for everyone. After the first request to place a security freeze on your credit file, the credit reporting agencies may charge up to $5 fee to place, temporarily lift or to remove a security freeze, unless you have documented proof like a police report, that you have already been a victim of Identity theft. See more on New York credit report freeze, and the recent New Hampshire credit report freeze that becomes effective in January.
