I was asked a question which in nutshell was - how to make the credit reporting agencies remove tax lien which was filed by mistake.

Even after IRS issued withdrawal of federal tax lien acknowledging its error, the three credit agencies procrastinate.

And my answer was to start a dispute and write letters to the credit agencies with polite request to remove the tax lien that was placed incorrectly to begin with.

It may help to get the IRS to state in writing the very fact that it filed the tax lien in error.

If you get denied by credit bureaus, write again in about 30 days from the time of denial. And again and again. So this is how to remove tax lien, otherwise it may stay for 7 years. It will not affect your credit score and rating, as IRS must notify credit bureaus on the fact of lien withdrawal, but always have the withdrawal copy handy, when applying for a loan.
