Credit report shows Ex bad credit records

Q: I have just received a copy of my free annual credit report and found several negative credit records that were not mine. These records belong to my husband ex-wife, who has a very similar, albeit spelled differently name. I was sure that this spelling difference should be enough to clear this up but it isn't. There is a tax lien and several credit card charge offs on the report that have nothing to do with me.
What would be the best way for me to dispute these entries? Obviously, if the debts aren't mine, I have no way of proving that an error does exist other than my word against theirs. Any suggestions you can give me would be helpful. On the credit report, the ex wife's social security number is listed under mine and her many various addresses are mixed in with mine.
A: That is one frustrating case of credit repair. Unfortunately with the credit reporting agencies, you are guilty until you prove your innocence, so you have to fix your credit. The ex wife's social security number listed under yours can be the shortest way out. Write to the credit agencies in a language similar to this credit dispute letter, stating that the other social security and debts belong to your husband's ex who happened to have a similar name.
Also would help if you can demonstrate wrong addresses - yours vs. hers, so you may have to get in touch with the landlord and ask for a letter stating that you never lived there but the ex did. One address should be enough as that prove the obvious point of who is who. If those addresses weren't rentals, you may have to dig into the county records to show who owned what and where, unless you keep the paperwork showing what you owned and when. These days, it is not that hard and many counties allow online access for almost free. If this doesn't work first time, you should write one more similar letter and if denied again, you will have to contact few of the creditors who own the bad credit records/accounts and request a verification of the ownership.
