CitiMortgage which is rumored to be bankrupt or on the verge, sent letters which are rather worrisome. Dear CitiMortgage Client: We are writing now to inform you that, during a routine shipment, a box containing your original loan file number XXXXXXXXX was lost while in possession of a third-party courier. While the loan file contained information you supplied CitiMortgage in connection with your mortgage application, there is no risk to your current mortgage loan as we retain copies of all executed documentation. We deeply regret that this occurred and want you to know the steps we are taking and some steps that we suggest you take to monitor your credit. And then the letter offers a complimentary one-year IdentityMonitor from Citi, provided by Citibank, of course. So how'd you like to get a lovely letter like this.

The question is if CItibank and CitiMortgage are trying to get borrowers hooked on this IdentityMonitor, and after a year to get them as paying customers. Of course they do, but without a doubt, the files containing people social securities, dates of births and addresses were lost. The bigger question is who is in possession of those files. But after what happened with all other similar incidents which exposed many to identity theft, the biggest question begs - don't they ever learn.
