Q: I went to a hospital 7 months ago for a few tests and procedures, I gave my insurance information, paid my $30 copay get everything done and forgot about. Then about 2 months ago, I got the bill which I discarded. Yesterday, someone called me from billing office and said that two procedures weren't covered. They want $830. I told them to go to hell and they threatened to put me on collection. I called my insurance, and those procedures indeed weren't paid for. I just got married and have no spare cash to pay, trying to save on down payment for a house. Do they have a right to send me to collection?

A: Of course they do, and you are quite short tempered, if you ask someone to go that far after just one call. The medical billing person is just going the job. If the procedures were performed but not covered, you should pay. Doctors don't work for free. Besides, medical collection over $400 will ruin your credit report somewhat, so it is not the best idea to have this when you are house-hunting. And $800 should not put a very big dent in something as large as house down payment.
