MAD collection agency drives me mad

Q: I have recently discovered a collection record on my credit report with MAD collection agency which originally goes back 12 or 13 years ago. I sent a debt validation letter 7 weeks ago exactly, haven't heard anything back. The debt is for $3,000 or so from the end of 1996, which I never paid a dime. The records from MAD go like VERIFIED 01/2008, PLACED 10/2006, CLOSED 08/2004, PLACED FOR COLLECTION 11/2002. I remember for a fact, original $1,700 collection happened in July 1997.

A: Sounds like they are re-aging your collection, really going MAD. It is illegal. They haven't responded to your validation letter, so they can't prove the debt is yours. Looks like they bought this debt from some other agency, re-age it and try to bully you into paying. Write them a polite letter along these lines and threaten to take them to small business court. It is cheap to file a suite there, and no matter which state you live in, you can sue them for few thousands more than the $3,000 they are looking to get from you.
