Statute of limitations on debt - New York State

Q: I am told that New York has 10 year statute of limitations on debt. Is that correct? I owe some major, at least for me, money to Capital One Visa and Macy's credit card from August 2003 and hoping for SOL to run out. 10 years are really going to knock me off.
A: You have to last for 8 more months or so. Fortunately for you, statute of limitations on debt in New York State is 6 years for all contract types - Oral, Written, Promissory Note and Open Account. New York does have 10 year statute on judgments, so whomever you talked to was likely confused.
