Payday loans in Wisconsin are booming in small towns

Times must be tough. Payday loan business is all rage and nowhere it is more obvious than in small towns across America. Business is slow for many retail shops, but the ones selling payday loans in Wisconsin, which I visit quite frequently are flourishing. Take the scenic Fort Atkinson, population under 12,000, located in Southern Wisconsin, 30 minutes from Illinois border. In 1996, Money Magazine named Fort Atkinson One of America's Hottest Little Boom Towns, but the only one thing booming right now is payday loan industry.

Drive along Madison Avenue and you see not one but four payday loan stores, each proclaiming how proudly it is serving Wisconsin. You find Cash Store, EZ Money Pay Day Loans, Advance America Cash Advance Centers and Quick Cash‎. Nearby there is Check Into Cash Advance Payday Loan Center on Lexington Boulevard as well as Cash Now Inc on South Main Street. Parking lots next to every one of them are bustling with cars and patrons going in and out. I stopped by one of these payday loan shops and got to talk to a gentleman who happened to be a lifelong Wisconsin resident in his mid fifties, and who makes a trip in this or other cash advance place every two weeks. He said he'd be rather hard pressed to get around without a payday loan on bi weekly basis, and to his knowledge, many people across small towns in Wisconsin and south of the border in Illinois would agree. He doesn't mind fees, as long as they are not outrageous. He wouldn't elaborate, what exactly is outrageous by his standards, and told me to visit a larger Wisconsin town to witness how payday loans help thousands to survive. He recommended nearby Janesville, but I had seen enough.
