Free Equifax credit report and how to dispute with Equifax
Q: How can I get Equifax credit report, and can I get it for free? I need to initiate dispute with Equifax as fast as possible. There is an incorrect negative information on my credit report and few inaccuracies I need to change, according to a loan officer in Chase I talked. He won't give me the report though. Out of all three, only Equifax is reporting it.
A: You can dispute with Equifax by phone, by mail or online. Dispute normally takes no more than 30 days, but occasionally can last up to 45 days. In order to dispute by phone and talk to a live representative, you must have a Report Confirmation Number, which can only be found at the top of your Equifax credit report or file.
Equifax also wants a Report Confirmation Number for an online dispute as it allows for a fast access to your credit report but doesn't require it. You can also start your dispute by mail without this number. You can get a copy of free Equifax credit report and other free annual credit reports by visiting annualcreditreport.com. Keep Equifax Report Confirmation Number for future references.
Keep in mind that you will need to provide personal information and supporting documentation for a dispute, such as
- name, address, social security number
- if you dispute name or date of birth, Equifax must have a copy of your driver license reflecting this change
- if you dispute current address, send a copy of your driver license or a utility bill reflecting this change
- if you dispute social security number, send a copy of your social security card or a W-2 form
- if you dispute specific credit records, provide all relevant information to support your dispute with Equifax
Once your dispute is ongoing, either Equifax or CSC Credit Services will notify you on the results and send you an updated free Equifax credit report. Examine it carefully to see if data you disputed has been changed or removed. If Equifax validates disputed data, it will remain in your credit file, but you can request that it be shown as disputed, and you can add a consumer statement of explanation to your credit file. If you dispute online, you may check the status of your dispute here. You will need Equifax credit report Confirmation Number.
Note that CSC Credit Services is a separate company, not owned by Equifax, operating locally in some parts of the country. It owns credit files which are reported through the Equifax credit reporting system. If your credit file is owned by CSC Credit Services you should initiate your dispute activity directly with CSC Credit Services.
