Settled debt and collection agency
I hate Illinois tollways. I was driving them last week, taking short and well deserved break in Central Wisconsin. Before going into the settled debt and annoying collection agency topic, I must explain something. The only thing these two sates have in common other than the border, is that neither has any provision for concealed carry. The last two states that are still holding up. Wisconsin is much better place than Illinois. It has nicer woods, excellent fishing, fewer people, better roads with no tolls and much cooler climate, especially further north. I think it also has less debt, settled or not.
Regardless, my T-Mobile service does not have much use in Wisconsin woods. While there, I started getting phone calls from what ended up being Arnold Scott Harris, P.C. which is a rather fat name for a debt collector. They probably do some other lawyer-like things besides going after unpaid debt, but they never left any message. Finally today I called back. That was all about previously settled debt with Illinois Tollway. We have been using I-PASS, the little thing that you stick to your wind shield with $50 deposit made through your credit card which is on file with IT. Every time you pass through the toll, your $50 deposit is used to pay electronically. Once the money is gone, it takes another $50 from that credit card and so on. You get the picture. The Chase Visa we used expired and we forget to update good folks in IT. Or rather they did not remind us. So we continued using the I-PASS with no money left. One bright day, some two years ago, I got bill, close to $400. Basically some 20 unpaid tolls $20 each, or something along these lines. That is on 40 cent tolls. I did not like the idea of being in debt with State and quickly settled $400 charge for $20. They were so nice because the recession was not here yet and they had some money, but mainly because many people had these problems and complained. Done, forgotten.
So when talking to that Arnold Scott Harris collection agency this morning, and hearing that I had $221 in unpaid debt with Illinois Tollway, I got a bit surprised. I got further surprised when he asked how I was going to settle this debt. And after I told the collector that I settled the matter long time ago, I got even more surprised. This dummy insolently demanded the settlement proof. At this point I started laughing. Proof? What more of a proof do you need if I am not having any trouble with IT or the state. Told him to tell his bosses to better check what debt they buy, told him to stop bothering me and get lost. Then I hung up.
