Too many open accounts

Q: I currently have 45 total accounts reported on my Equifax credit report with FICO score of 763 and "too many open revolving accounts" or something in that regard. That begs a question - how many is too many?
A: Who knows and frankly who cares, I saw those negative notes on credit reports with 4 total records and with 20. The only thing that can affect you is that some of your credit card issuers will see how many open accounts you have, revolving or installment, during a periodic review which all of them do, and decide that you do have too many. Then if you have $0 balance, they may close them. It may also hurt your credit score in case if you want to get an auto loan. That we tried to explain in Repair credit score quickly for the right type of loan.
