Credit card fraud, newegg.com
I am a victim of credit card fraud. Makes me truly mad. I don't have an account with newegg.com. As a matter of fact, I had not heard of this outfit until last Friday, when I went online to check my Bank of America MasterCard. Just in case, to see what's going on. Lo and behold, I see two strange transactions, made on 12/11/2010 with WWW.NEWEGG.COM. Both for around $130. Not too much, which is very smart of them.
So Monday morning, I called newegg, waited for 15 minutes, all right I guess for this time of the year. Finally some girl picked the phone -
Hi sir, sorry to hear, yes this account is flagged as a fraudulent.
Whoever used your credit card, bought some video card and some Intel chip.
Yes, both were shipped.
Yes, we know that the shipping address (the crook's) differs from the billing address (yours)
Yes, we have a policy to triple check if the addresses differ.
Unfortunately, in your case it went through automatic submission system.
Sorry no, I can't tell you what the shipping address is.
You can file credit card fraud report with your local police department.
Have a nice day.
So I went and filed. Will see what happens. I have not used this Bank of America MasterCard for a few months. I don't even carry it in my wallet. I did buy some stuff online from a few reputable places. Bank of America is good as it only shows 4 last credit card digits on your credit report, unlike Capital One, Chase or Citi. They also handled it quite nicely, reimbursing the money on a newly issued account within a day. BoA fraud department also said they are going after newegg.com for this money, so those dummies shipped the merchandise and will now return the payment. The fraud department rep also said they see a lot of fraudulent transactions coming from this outfit.
It is not the first time something like this happens to me. I described other credit card fraud cases in How to dispute credit card charge. The point is, check you credit card statements regularly. Also see your credit report as often as you can. The crooks are getting smarter and also quite desperate. Economy is bad, so people do bad things.
If someone gets a hold of your credit card, chances are he or she can get a hold of your personal information and other credit cards. Doing it smart and being patient, the crook can make many small transactions which can go unnoticed by you for a long time. Not only such a credit card fraud would ruin your credit, you would also spend many hours on the phone with the creditors.
